On Sunday 17th July '05, MGS has conducted a felicitation function at Hotel Ganga, Ashok Nagar, Chennai to honour the career achievement of Asst. Professor of National University of Singapore , Dr Prahlad Vadakkepat. Incidentally, it was the first general function after the birth of MGS and he was available in India that time. The evening with him & his family was pleasant and witnessed by a moderate turn out - more than 70 including families.

The function started with an "Easwara prarthana" by Arjun - son of a member. Mr Kutty Sankaran presided over the function. Mr Kishore Guptan welcomed the gathering. The Chief Guest was garlanded by Mr AR Narayanan and a memento was presented to Chief Guest as a token of affection by Madras Guptans. The convener, Vaipur Balasubrahmannian has presented the report and emphasized the need of enrolling more members to the Samajam net. At this function, the Chief Guest was kind enough to give away the cash awards to the toppers of 10th and 12th exams - from the children of Samajam members.

During his return speech, Dr Prahlad has told that he was very happy to attend this function and he felt very homely here compared to any other function he attended ever before, as this is the first time he is getting honoured through such a function by our own community. He has added that he was touched by the affection which was poured on him and expressed the need of such a Samajam and extended his whole hearted support for the progress of Samajam. He has also explained to the young generation about his academic and career path which was a moral booster for the young lots who attended. Though there ware no cultural programmes organized as part of this, we could fill that gap by the song of Mrs Biju Prahlad.

Mr V Mani proposed the vote of thanks and the function concluded with National Anthem.
During the Tea -time, members and children could interact with each other and with the chief guest more and they have gone back with a motivated mind especially from the Samajam point of view.

MGS - Formation

MADRAS GUPTAN SAMAJAM - MGS

Most of the Guptan / Moothan and other allied Aryavaisya community members settled in Chennai was thinking about a common platform for sharing and airing their views for many years but unfortunately it was somehow not materialised. Perhaps, "Madhirasi" Guptan may be the first Pravasi Guptan who left his native in search of livelihood. Madhirasi and Tea Shops are mutually inclusive names in the beginning of last century, at least as far as our community is concerned, and it was the real root of the transformation of today's Pravasi Guptans. And, a common platform for the group is an unavoidable necessity.

There was an initiative taken 15 years back by some well wishers and they had their initial meeting and somehow the momentum was not kept on. Candidly, that was the driving force and it cautions about the fate of such organizations if not maintained the tempo continuously.
The enthusiasm of those who attended the meetings was really encouraging though not channalised. It gave the courage to form MADRAS GUPTAN SAMAJAM - MGS on 29 May 2005 and had the first monthly meeting of the Adhoc committee on 12 Jun. The committee members have decided to assemble every moth in one of the member's residence. The main agenda was enrolling more & more members in to the Samajam and publishing a directory of members for internal circulation.

A report of formation of MGS is published in Malayala Manorama & Mathruboomi Chennai editions. . The adhoc committee elected then was ...

Vaipur Balasubrahmannian, Convenor
V Vijayan, Dy registrar, High court,
Kishore R Gupta, Gen Manager (BPO Firm),
V Mani - SBI,
AR Narayanan - Retd Sr Investigator - Census Dept,
Vaipur Mani - Retd Sr Section officer, Railway Urban Bank,
V S Guptan - Retd Chief architect , TN Govt,
VR Chandran - Business (Tea Shop),
Babu Mohan, Vadakkepat - HCL Tech,
CR Ramesh - business (S/W Firm),
K Parasuraman - Business,( Mould components)
PS Ramakrishnan - auditor, TNEB.

It was emphazised that this initiative to be kept moving and to get refined more and more for becoming a full fledged association with activities in wider canvas.
